Beyond the Bible Story: Making Quiet Time Personal

1.     Introduce the idea of a personal devotional time by starting with a family devotional time. Have the expectation that after family devotions is a personal quiet time with the Lord.

2.     Center your family devotional time around a meal. This sends the message that when we feed our bodies, we feed our spirits too.

3.     Make the time enjoyable, something they look forward to. You know what will work for your child: one-on-one time with you, special pens used only for devotional time, rewards of stickers or treats, etc. Whatever works for your child to love their devotional time.

4.     Expect resistance from the enemy and command him to leave in Jesus’ name. Resistance can look like squabbling children, urgent interruptions, and fatigue on your part. Recognize the enemy’s tactics. Pray and persevere.

5.     Focus on helping your children hear God’s voice for themselves. I will have some help for you in that department in a couple of months. In the meantime, be encouraged that helping your child recognize the voice of God may be the single most important spiritual insight you can give them.
