Identity in Christ for Preschoolers
Lesson Objective:
To help children recognize that God’s voice is the only one we need to listen to about our identity.
Circle Time:
Who speaks the truth about who you are? The puppets (the world) or the Creator (Jesus)?
What is one thing Jesus says about you in the Bible that you can remember when you feel like you aren't good enough?
Teaching:
God created you, and He loves you. Jesus saved you so He could be your best friend forever. You may have many friends, but only Jesus is your friend forever. His words about you are the most important. Jesus gets to say who you are (your identity).
Do you know what God says about you? God says He chose you to be His own beloved child. You are forgiven and radiant with His glory. God says, right now, you are seated with Christ Jesus in His heavenly Kingdom (Ephesians 2:6).
Why is it important that you are seated with Jesus in heaven? Jesus gives you His power and authority to bless others. God’s Holy Spirit helps you to love others and bless them.
Activation Ideas:
1. King David's Joy Journal (Bible Study Connection)
Materials: Drawing paper, markers, and audio music.
Action: Read 2 Samuel 6:14 (David dancing before the Lord). Play a high-energy worship song and allow the children to dance with all their might in the living room. Afterward, have them draw a picture of themselves dancing with Jesus.
The Lesson: Teaches children that our talents, movement, and play are acts of worship directed to God, not for human approval.
2. The Vine & Branches Declarative Prayer (Bible Study Connection)
Materials: None required (optional: printed Bible verses for older children).
Action: Have the children repeat this declarative prayer several times: “Father God, I belong to You. I am deeply rooted in You. You are my identity. You are the vine, and I am the branches (John 15:5). I am in You. Together we will do amazing and wonderful things. Amen.”
The Lesson: Teaches children their spiritual identity and that they are securely connected to God as the source of their life, purpose, and strength.
3. The Crown & Sword Blessing (Bible Study Connection)
Materials: Toy/paper crowns (symbolizing authority) and toy/cardboard swords (symbolizing power).
Action: Have your children dress up in the crowns and hold the swords. Guide them to practice pronouncing positive blessings and encouraging words over others.
The Lesson: Teaches children that they hold spiritual authority in Christ and that their words possess the power to encourage, uplift, and bring God's favor to those around them.
4. The Waterfall of God’s Love (Bible Study Connection)
Materials: Audio device to play quiet worship music.
Action: Put on quiet worship music. Have the children close their eyes and imagine the words you speak over them as a refreshing waterfall. Speak as if you were God, leaving time between each statement for the Holy Spirit to minister. Say things like:
“I knit you together in your mother’s womb and I love you.”
“You are not a mistake; I formed you for a purpose.”
“You are in Me, and I am in you.”
“Every part of you – your voice, your mind, your hands, your heart – will bear fruit for My kingdom.”
“Remember, I called you to be my own. I am always with you. “
Let them share about what they felt or saw during the activity and record their experiences in their spiritual journals.
The Lesson: Teaches children to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit, demonstrates the intimacy of personal prayer and meditation, and builds their identity based on how God uniquely created them.
