Discovering the Power of Forgiveness
Lesson Objective
The student will understand that forgiveness means releasing offenses to Jesus rather than letting anger grow. They will learn that Jesus provides the strength to forgive others because He has unconditionally forgiven us, and they will practice both asking for and granting forgiveness.
🧺 Circle Time
Gather on the rug or at the table to transition into learning time.
· Opening Song/Routine: Light a small candle or sing a familiar family worship song.
· Heart Check: Ask the children how their hearts feel when they are upset with someone. Explain that today we are talking about a special tool Jesus gave us to keep our hearts light and happy: forgiveness.
· Scripture Reading: Read 1 John 1:9 together: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
📖 Bible Teaching
· Releasing Control: Forgiving someone does not mean that what they did was right. It simply means you are going to let God take care of it. You are giving the feeling of being wronged to Jesus.
· The Price Paid: God has forgiven us for the wrongs we have done through Jesus. Jesus paid for our sins by dying on the cross. Once you ask for that forgiveness, Jesus forgives you every time you ask Him, no matter what you have done. He forgets the bad and gives you a fresh start because He loves you. He wants you to tell Him everything, both the good and the bad.
· Strength Beyond Ourselves: Jesus also gives us the courage and strength to forgive others, even if they do not deserve it. Jesus asks us to forgive those who hurt us because He knows that is what is best for us.
· The Fire in the Heart: When we hang on to those hurts, they continue to burn our hearts and grow bigger. Soon the hurt in our heart is so big that we start treating others unkindly because our own heart hurts so much. He wants you to forgive so your heart will be free of hurt and anger. Once you are free from hurt and anger, you can be happy again and treat others with kindness.
· Healthy Boundaries: If someone always says or does mean things when you are around them, you do not have to be around them. But you do need to forgive them. When you forgive others, God forgives you.
💬 Heart-to-Heart Discussion Questions
Use these open-ended questions to encourage conversation and listen to what is in your child's heart:
· What kind of things do you need to ask forgiveness for?
· Why should you forgive someone for hurting you?
· Who can you ask for help if you are having trouble forgiving someone?
· How do you ask someone to forgive you?
· Why is having a clean heart important?
🎭 Life Application & Roleplay
Practice the language of reconciliation together. Have the children practice using this specific phrasing to admit wrongdoing without making excuses:
"I am sorry I ________ [admit to wrongdoing without excuse], and I will do _______ differently next time. Will you forgive me?"
Parent Discipleship Tips
· Reinforce with Grace: Throughout the week, encourage them to apologize sincerely using the script above, and encourage siblings to say, "I forgive you" or "I accept your apology."
· Honor Readiness: If a child is not ready to forgive yet, allow them the space to say so, and pray with them for the willingness.
· Model the Lesson: Remember to model this yourself by gently forgiving your children when they test boundaries, showing them a living example of grace.
🙏 Guided Prayers
Prayer of Confession and Releasing Anger
"Dear Jesus, I am sorry for __________ [confession of wrongs]. Thank You for forgiving my sins. Jesus, I also choose to give up my anger and mean heart toward those who hurt me. I forgive _____________ [specific names], and I bless them, in Jesus’ name. Thank You for the freedom in my heart. Amen."
Prayer for a Clean Heart
"Dear Jesus, thank You for giving me a clean heart. I will be quick to ask Your forgiveness and the forgiveness of others when I am wrong. Thank You for helping me to forgive others when they hurt me. I love You. Amen."
🎨 Hands-On Activities & Holy Spirit Activations
· The Covered Heart Craft: Draw a large heart on a white piece of paper. Cut out little bits of black paper and write common sins or hurts on them, such as lying, stealing, hitting, or unkind words. Have the children glue these black pieces onto the white heart, discussing how our own sins and the hurts done to us make our hearts feel dark and heavy. Next, take a larger red heart, which symbolizes the blood of Jesus covering our sins, and let the children glue the red heart completely over the top of the sin-covered heart to show how Jesus cleanses us.
· Family Communion & Relationship Reset: Gather as a family for a special communion time. Begin with a time of quiet confession and repentance, demonstrating to your children that this is the path to a clean heart. Take this opportunity to actively forgive one another for recent family hurts and clean up any strained relationships. Thank Jesus together for the gift of repentance, His forgiveness, and His sacrifice on the cross.
· Scripture Story Devotional: Read and discuss biblical examples of forgiveness together. Excellent passages to study include Joseph forgiving his brothers (Genesis 37-50), the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), or the parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35).
· The Forgiveness Tree: Draw a large tree trunk on a piece of poster board. Have the children cut out green paper leaves. For every sin they confess or every incident of hurt they choose to forgive, have them attach a separate leaf to the branches. Talk about how full, beautiful, and alive the tree becomes when our hearts are kept clean and free.
📓 Notebook
Have the children paste their completed "Covered Heart" craft into their spiritual journals as a visual reminder of the lesson.
