I’m Going to Ruin My Bible
My girlfriend Margie passed away. Her daughters found dozens of Bibles to give away. They kept the Bibles that Margie had written in and marked up. With tears in her eyes, Margie’s daughter said, “I had no idea she was so close to the Lord.”
Secondly, a book I was reading had a fictional character about my age whose Bible was a mess. The cover was coming loose, and notes and letters were constantly falling out. Yet someone was saved just by reading her margin notes.
Then my pastor posed the question from the pulpit, “What would I learn about your walk with the Lord by looking at your Bible?”
Can you hear God calling to me? I can!
I have a whole shelf full of spiritual journals. But my Bible is clean. It felt too sacred to mark up. Now, God has issued me an invitation. I have His permission.
Still as I was deciding which Bible to use, my thought was Which one shall I ruin?
This year – 2026 – I am going to “ruin” my Bible. I will be marking my favorite verse and journaling in the margins. . . and generally making a mess of it.
Would you like to join me? We have God’s permission. And who knows, maybe someone will find salvation from reading our Bible notes. I’m going to pray for that. . ..
